Facebook Hacked: Paris Hilton Exposed

By DavidReece • Mar 25th, 2008 • Category: Bizarre, News

(Associated Press) A Canadian hacker inadvertently exposed a number of private photos of Paris Hilton when he exploited a security hole on the social network, Facebook that allowed access to thousands of private images in user accounts. The images included a previously unreleased library of photos of Hilton at a post-emmy awards party and were not intended for public release.

Facebook were alerted of the bug and have since fixed it, but a spokesman for the celebrity train-wreck said..

“We are very disappointed at this lapse in security, in regards to both the oversight of the individual responsible for uploading the images and to Facebook itself, who have let their users down by failing to meet their responsibility.”

The “hacker”, a computer technician from Vancouver, Byron Ng spotted the security flaw after a recent update that allowed greater control over the sharing of user content including images, but neglected to hide private content from the recently uploaded images, which was mistakenly made available to everyone.

A Facebook spokesman responded to the breach by saying..

“We take privacy very seriously and continue to make enhancements to the site.”

In an age where virtually every aspect of a persons life is made available online, it’s quite shocking that people still rely on the trustworthiness of online services like social networks to keep their personal details private, especially when a service like Facebook boasts over 40 million users. The chances are just too great that human error could leave you exposed.
