Mikons Unleashes Personal Icons

By DavidReece • Mar 8th, 2008 • Category: Business & Technology, News, Technology

Mikons.com is a free online service that puts personal branding at your fingertips, allowing you to create a personal icon (called a mikon) that describes you, instead of the traditional icons or logos used by companies.

Curious about this novel idea, I set about trying to create my mikon, and surprisingly the editor is childsplay to use, relying on a large selection of clip-art like prefab’ images you can combine, rotate and edit on the site - which means you don’t have to be a graphic designer to jump right in and create a decent looking icon.

Mikonoclast, LLC is the parent company of Mikons.com and is managed by ex-IBM employee Mark Smith, who claims…

“Mikons.com offers a new form of self-expression that connects people through visual symbols, and features the most advanced online vector drawing tool in the world.”

That’s quite a bold claim, but first impressions are good and this site should do well, but I’m not sure if there’s any serious or lasting application for the service, unless they opt to collaborate with established social networks to help spread the service. I’m sure they’d have no problem finding interested sites to pick up their API.
