Google to punish pagerank for Digg stories?

According to the Google Blog, a spokesman for the search giant has hinted at a new strategy to reduce the page-rank of sites linked from social bookmarking site Digg.
The move is said to mirror the recent punishment of blogs relying on “un-natural linking strategies” such as sites which take part in paid reviews or paid links, extending the drop in page-rank to sites that leverage social bookmarking sites such as Digg and StumbleUpon to gain a “disproportionate advantage” over sites that rely on traditional traffic.
Google’s Jeff Waltz says…
“We are working on strategies to level the playing field, effectively bringing back natural search patterns enjoyed in the pre-social bookmarking days. For webmasters who use social media responsibly, this is nothing to worry about - we will be targetting mainly a small minority of prolific bookmarkers with a new algorithm that looks at linking patterns over time.
Webmasters who rely heavily on bookmarking their own sites to gain traffic will likely see a drop in pagerank before the end of 2008, and we will be working closely with two major social bookmarking sites to find a solution that will have no detremental effect on the average internet user.”
It seems Google is cracking down on behavior linked with manipulative or deceptive social practices, but how this will effect the casual website owner remains to be seen. Maybe it’s time to remove that Digg button.
**Update** Google have since removed the story, which sounds to me like the author wasn’t authorised to announce it. If anyone has another link to the story, or any more info, please let me know!

SEO guys, If you’re doing SMO of your own sites by yourself then Stop SMO now otherwise you’ll loose you website pagerank…………………..
I find it strange that they pulled a story from the google blog - I would have liked to have seen the original posting as it was. But thanks for the alert - it seems to me that this years “paid link debacle” will be the “social leveraging debacle”.
“For webmasters who use social media responsibly, this is nothing to worry about ”
What do they mean? I would assume leveraging social media would mean using it within the guidelines offered by the bookmarking site - thats the whole point - if you are unfailry leveraging it (e.g multiple accounts) then you are most like;y to be outed by the community - I am not saying that its not happening, but the proof that its making a huge impact on SEO and search engines enough for them to turn their heads to it just isnt forthcoming.

Penalizing the websites of site owners submitted their content in sites like digg, really sounds extreme.Digg by its own algorithm pretty good in banning the sites advertising their content and most ecommerce sites.
And Mutt cutt replying in a similar sphinn story saying, ” There’s not even a Googler named Jeff Waltz as far as I can tell.”

i cant wait to see them penalize massive corporations who are abusing these services
Gizmos, I think you’re oversimplifying the issue. Google isn’t taking aim at SMO, they’re trying to stop “disproportionate advantage.” SMO doesn’t necessarily mean Digging every post on your blog. BUT anyone doing a fair amount of SMO really needs to acquaint themselves with the story of Icarus as we get closer to d-day… :)

Calm down guys, you are about to throw the baby out with the bath water. Google did not say “penalize bloggers who use Digg” they said “Bloggers who abuse Digg”
What they are saying is “STOP SUBMITTING YOUR OWN BLOG POSTS” and the “STOP SHOUTING YOUR OWN CONTENT” and doing nothing more. If all you do is submit your own blog and then shout it to your friends then you are already screwed. Google has been watching this for a while now and I told you all this months ago but no one wanted to believe me.
You all wanted to just keep submitting you own stuff and then shouting it to your friends. Oh look, I got a 110 Diggs today. Look what that is going to get you now. If you have been doing this you are already screwed. It is in everybody’s history, not just their private history either, their public history. Yeah, every shout you ever sent, all over Digg.
Too late my friends. You people have been doing this for so long just to get a couple measily diggs that you forgot that Google is watching. I blogged this months ago here:
http://www.keywebdata.com/?p=79
Digg banned me for writing that article, I published it and the next morning, KeyWebData.com is banned from Digg. Accused of spam by the Digg mafia. Don’t know what the Digg mafia is? Keep publishing SEO articles on Digg and you will find out. Or you could just Google “digg mafia”
