WooMe takes the mystery out of dating

Online Dating: The last refuge of the socially inept. Ideal for the 35 year old virgin who lives in his mothers basement, making plasticine ladies and getting the boobs “just right” before going online with a photo of Antonio Banderas ripped from Google Images to meet lonely saps of (hopefully) the opposite sex in a last ditch attempt to get some action before hitting the grave.

But no more! Because woome.com takes the mystery out of dating; combining speed-dating with video, in a service that ensures “19 year old Annalise” isn’t actually Barry, the 56 year old sex-pest who’ll do anything with a pulse.

Call me a cynic, but the internet wasn’t meant for dating. Try open the curtains, go outside once in a while. Meet women with no signup fee. Will WooMe change my mind?

Well, not really. For all its attractive layout, and simple design (which is good) - I can’t help thinking “..but it’s a dating site for god sake” which I’ll never get used to.

Here’s how it works; you join ‘Sessions’ in which you have 5 minutes to woo as many participants as possible without showing yourself up and looking like a desperate wierdo, and if you get any reciprical ‘woos’ at the end, you can make contact.

I realise there are some people out there that will love the idea, and the site itself is really good (just not my bag) so with that in mind, I have to give it the thumbs up for design and functionality.

Browsing through the member profiles, I can see that having video instead of static images tends to filter out the really hideous people you see on some sites, but there’s also a fair amount of posers who just… warrant a punch. If Woome can filter those out too, they’re onto a winner.

  1. I just checked out Woo me - pretty cool. i met 3 dudes in 3 minutes and although none of them woo’d me, at least i figured that out in 3 minutes instead of wasting 3 hours.

  2. Do you have to be so cruel in every review? This is one of my favourite blogs, but I wish you’d hold back on the abuse once in a while.

The information you provide is well researched and interesting - how about some diplomacy too?

Dating sites aren’t just for losers.

  3. Actually I don’t think this review was /that/ brutal. Dating is for hippies.

    You’re slipping SE, more cruelty!

  4. This one’s not for me either. What’s the point when you never know what you’re getting?

  5. Oh please! Dating sites aren’t that bad. You do paint a dark picture of the world, although I suppose it’s all good controvesy for your readers.

  6. @Sam, that’s ridiculous. Yes, they are that bad.

  7. I can see the potential in woome.com. Its the free to use angle, that with all its features, seems like it could grow. I can see people who might not otherwise use it, try it for free, get a match, and then feel more like paying the 1$.

Also, on the art of wooing. I can see this as being a huge skill to have, but not necessarily the one to be best at. It would be enormously helpful in starting out and making deals, but in the end you still have to run a good business with a good product.
